Historic buildings, sites, structures, and districts have value that is worthy of recognition. One level of recognition is the listing of these properties on the National Register of Historic Places. Although primarily an honor, National Register listing may also provide financial incentives for a property owner. Income-producing properties are eligible for federal rehabilitation tax credits, and several states offer these credits for residential properties as well. Many grant programs are tied to National Register listing.

Three Gables has extensive experience in the preparation of National Register nominations, including Multiple Property Submission cover documents and thematic nominations, which range from individual properties to historic districts, rural to urban commercial, and buildings to landscapes. Three Gables can assist property owners through all phases as well, from initial research through writing through successful submission to SHPOs and the National Park Service.

National Historic Landmarks, a higher level of federal recognition, require more extensive research and historic context preparation. Three Gables is privileged to have experience in this area as well, including the NHL designation for Spring Hill Ranch in Chase County, Kansas, which was critical to the successful designation of the ranch as the first Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in the National Park Service system.
